AdBlue® for Passenger cars, Vans and Other light-duty vehicles
SCR technology and the need for AdBlue is becoming more and more common for cars and other passenger vehicles. Today you can buy vehicles equipped with an SCR system that uses AdBlue from most well known car manufacturers.
Yara is the world's largest manufacturer of AdBlue. Our AdBlue has reduced dangerous emissions from the so-called heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks, coaches and buses since 2004.
For passenger cars, we offer packaged AdBlue in a variety of formats. Together with our Partners – from car makers and workshops to fuel station forecourts – we give drivers across the world access to AdBlue by Yara.
Working with leading retailers we have decided not to reach out directly to the individual consumer. But you can read here about how to use AdBlue and why AdBlue quality matters. We are unable to answer questions from individual car drivers.

SCR vehicles are as simple to use as other cars or passenger vehicles. You will see that having to fill AdBlue is as easy as filling the screenwash or checking the level of oil in your car.
AdBlue – the fastest growing product in your auto chemicals category
To satisfy legislation all diesel cars with SCR must always have AdBlue in the dedicated AdBlue tank – from the first fill at the assembly line, to the refills the driver must administer throughout the cars life. This will represent a significant business opportunity for the value chain stakeholders.
As a Retailer of car parts/accessories, or part of an Aftermarket Care OEM programme, AdBlue offers a significant new customer opportunity. Reassuring drivers that AdBlue is available should they be considering to purchase an SCR vehicle, reminding drivers that they should top up with AdBlue; or, indeed, offering to top up for them.
Re-packaging companies can also benefit from the new market that is developing, and Yara can supply bulk solutions and dispensing equipment for this sector to repack into branded or own brand retail packages.

For car care / automotive chemicals Retailers, AdBlue will rapidly grow to become a significant – if not the fastest moving – product in the category. Wherever diesel is refuelled – AdBlue will become an essential complementing offer. And reminding drivers that they should top up with AdBlue – or indeed, offer to top it up for them – will become a key upselling activity. Automotive OEMs
For OEMs – Yara's market leading presence and proven track record in AdBlue will be invaluable. With 5 primary production sites – two of them the world's largest – we have tanks and terminals literally all over the world. Securing all-important proximity – both to the assembly lines and to the aftermarket. AdBlue by Yara is available in appropriate formats for: first fill, after-market service refills and DIY formats for OEM dealerships.

Yara’s AdBlue is sold under the Air1 brand, and can be used in all makes and models of cars that need AdBlue.
Beware: if you see a service station that sells AdBlue at the pump, ask if you can fill up your car with the equipment - as not all pumps are designed to fill up cars. It is likely that some service stations only offer AdBlue for commercial vehicles as they need to refill with AdBlue much more often than cars do, sometimes every week. As a result of this usage, oil companies have developed a network of service stations with AdBlue pumps that meet these heavy duty vehicle’s requirements, such as larger nozzles and fast delivery which will be incompatible for refilling cars.

How much does AdBlue cost?
AdBlue is sold by car dealerships that determine the price of AdBlue independently. We are a producer of AdBlue and supply retail sites across the world.
There is no law on AdBlue prices, so it may be wise that you compare AdBlue prices at several retail sites so as to find the most competitive price. It is possible that dealerships from different car brands will offer AdBlue at different prices too.
What drives AdBlue prices?
Several factors impact AdBlue price. AdBlue is a high purity urea solution that has synthetic urea as a raw material. Because of the quality needed it is produced so that it is much purer than that used as fertilizer by farmers. It is therefore sold at a completely different price. Also, urea production requires a lot of energy, mostly natural gas. The price levels of oil, natural gas and ammonia have a direct impact on urea prices. When the price of these commodities increases, it has an impact on the AdBlue market prices.
How do I know if my car needs AdBlue?
Your vehicle will need AdBlue if it is equipped with SCR technology. SCR technology is in several Euro 6 standard cars. You will find this information from:
- Your car dealership
- In the Owner’s Manual for your vehicle
If your vehicle has an SCR system, you will find the AdBlue tank (often with a blue cover) close to the diesel tank or in the boot, under the carpet. Each make will have a difference location for this tank.
How can I check if my car needs AdBlue?
On your dashboard, you will find an indicator or a light that will signal that you need to fill up the AdBlue in your tank. Usually your garage will refill it for you when you come to service your car, but you may need a refill between services. If this happens, it is very easy to fill your tank with AdBlue. Simply fill your separate AdBlue tank like you fill your diesel tank, from a can or possibly from the pump at a service station, if it is equipped for cars.
How much AdBlue will my car need?
The amount of AdBlue needed by your car varies. It depends of the following factors:
- Vehicle type (4x4, car, MPV…)
- Engine type
- Driving requirements and power needed (driving on mountains road, on snow, with a trailer or a caravan…)
- Driving style
You can also use the AdBlue indicator on your vehicle to monitor your consumption. There are several on-line forums where car drivers discuss their AdBlue consumption. If you visit them, it will also give you an idea of what to expect.
In some cases, you will not even notice AdBlue, as your consumption will be so low that the car will only need a refill every once in a while when it goes for a service at the garage.
